The wood is finished with a two in one sealer/stain that protects against water damage and highlights the beautiful natural wood grain. You choose your stain color, layout, and size. 
Sizes:
4 1/2" x 9 1/2" is designed for an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper folded in thirds (8 1/2" x 3 3/4")
5 1/2" x 12 1/4" is for a sheet folded in half long ways (11" x 4 1/4")
6 1/2" x 9 1/2" for an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet folded in half (5 1/2" x 8 1/2") * this size and anything larger is made out of a high quality plywood to avoid warping*
9 1/2" x 12 works for a full sheet of paper (8 1/2" x 11") *this size is a high quality plywood to prevent warping*
